Proposed Project Title:  Self-Healing Low-Cost Integrated Transceiver Circuits For Outer Space Applications

Principal Supervisor:   Dr Mury Thian              Second Supervisor:  Prof Vincent Fusco (tbc)

Project Description:

Advanced silicon processes have enabled development of low-cost millimetre-wave (mmW) integrated transceiver (TRX) circuits aimed for various emerging applications. However, high-power mmW design in nanometre scale CMOS technologies is particularly susceptible to process variations, device model accuracy, environmental changes and aging.

Progressive scaling in CMOS technologies poses great challenges in creating reliable and robust device models, which are crucial in high frequency circuit design as the transistor parasitics contribute a large fraction of the total circuit capacitance. This is further exacerbated by the fact that the transistor models provided by foundries are often primarily optimized for digital circuits.

Process variations, aging effects and environmental variations such as temperature and load mismatch can significantly degrade the performance of mm-wave TRX circuits, where both output power and efficiency are strongly dependent on process and environmental parameters.

The key objective of this project is to investigate revolutionary self-healing techniques to mitigate the above issues by identifying any degradation and subsequently modifying the parameters of the circuit to improve its performance post fabrication with minimum overhead in terms of area and power consumption.
