Project Description:

It is anticipated that by 2020 more than 50 billion devices will be connected to the Internet. These devices will allow for smart applications, such as a ‘Smart Office’ to sense, monitor and even control the environment in which we live and work.

The aim of this project is to exploit a variety of sensors for developing a smart internet connected monitor, using both the Cloud and Edge technologies. Note that a prototype of the overall system is already developed and the source code for this will be available. The Edge technology allows for analytics to be performed closer to the sensors so that large volumes of data do not have to be transferred to the Cloud.

This interesting Cloud-Edge leveraging application will be developed using a Raspberry Pi that will be connected to the Cloud. The project will experiment a number of metrics, such as power, performance, throughput, network latency while processing a popular face detection application. 


Objectives:
  1. To develop a Cloud-Edge based Smart Office application.
  2. To setup a Cloud-Edge prototype that makes use of an existing face detection application.
  3. Experiment the application with different sensors and collect relevant metrics using both the Cloud and the Edge
  4. Analyse the results to identify whether there is a benefit in using the Edge technology. 

Academic Requirements:

The scheme is open to all EEECS Undergraduates (apart from students on the BIT degree pathway and students who are due to graduate this summer)


General Information:

Each internship will last between 6-8 weeks and will pay a weekly stipend of £250.

Accommodation and travel costs are not provided under this scheme.

Start date: 2 July 2018 (negotiable)
