Machine Leaning based Modelling of the Energy and Reliability of State-of-the-Art Servers

  • Machine Leaning based Modelling of the Energy and Reliability of State-of-the-Art Servers
EEECS Summer Research Internships 2018

Proposed Project Title:

  • Machine Leaning based Modelling of the Energy and Reliability of State-of-the-Art Servers

Principal Supervisor(s):
  • Dr Georgios Karakonstantis & Dr. Lev Mukhanov

Project Description:

The new paradigms of Internet-of-Things and Edge computing evangelize the processing and analysis of various workloads at the Edge of the Cloud on extremely energy efficient and reliable servers.

The aim of this project is to execute a set of emerging data mining and streaming applications on servers running under different operating conditions and analyse the achieved trade-offs between energy, execution time and reliability. Using the obtained results a machine learning based model of the servers’ energy and reliability will be developed.

The project will utilize the unique infrastructure consisting of ARM based servers available in the DSSC centre of ECIT. The performed analysis and the developed multi-parameter model will help to further optimize the energy efficiency and enhance the  system’s reliability and potentially its security.

Objectives:
  1. Get acquainted with a state-of-art server and the available system characterization processes
  2. Port various applications on the existing ARM based servers utilizing the existing infrastructure
  3. Execute the applications under various conditions, i.e. temperature, voltage, frequency and measure the achieved execution time, power, manifested errors in CPUs and memories
  4. Analyse the data obtained from various applications
  5. Utilize the results to build and evaluate a machine learning based system’s energy-reliability model (depending on the available time)

Academic Requirements:

The scheme is open to all EEECS Undergraduates (apart from students on the BIT degree pathway and students who are due to graduate this summer)
