Research Excellence Framework

The outcomes for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 were announced in December 2014. This was a national survey of research quality and activity covering all UK university level institutions for the period 2008-13. The quality profiles for each Unit of Assessment (disciplinary unit) combine gradings for research outputs (65%), research impact (20%) and research environment (15%).

Research was graded on a scale of 1* to 4*, with only the upper grades of 4* (world leading in originality, significance and rigour) and 3* (internationally excellent in originality, significance and rigour) attracting funding.

In line with the university's strategy, our two disciplines aimed to submit the maximum number of eligible staff. For the overall university outcome, placing it in the top 20 by 'Research Power' and the top 10 by 'Research Intensity', see here.
