War and the Supernatural in Early Modern Europe is a research project funded by the European Research Council and hosted by Queen’s University Belfast. Our research team of four historians, led by Dr Ian Campbell, is re-examining the relationship between faith and force in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
This European Research Council Starting Grant (2015 – 677490) began in 2016 and will conclude in 2020. Over four and a half years, Dr Campbell, Dr Floris Verhaart, Dr Todd Rester, and Ms Karie Schultz, will publish both English translations of contemporary Latin texts, and new analyses of the relationship between faith and force in both Catholic and Protestant Europe. Overall, the War and Supernature research team aim to compose a new history of Christian religious militancy before the Enlightenment.
