MHY7011 - Individually Negotiated Topic

Students research and write an in-depth study of a specific historical area or problem, within the field of their Masters programme. The module provides an opportunity for students to explore an issue in depth.  Students are free to choose the topic but they must discuss it with the MA Coordinator and strand convenor. The essay topic should be distinct from the other MA course work undertaken by the student.

How will this module be taught?

An individual supervisor is assigned to the students enrolled on the module.  The supervisor will meet with the student regularly to define the topic to be researched; identify relevant research questions and then assess the progress being made.

How will this module be assessed?

Assessment is by coursework.  Students write an essay of 5,500 - 6,000 words.

What can I read over the summer vacation?

Students who would like to enrol on this module should consult with the MA co-ordinator, Professor Mary O’Dowd ( for advice on preliminary reading.
