Centre for Experimental Medicine Hosts NI Science Festival Open Day
On Saturday 27 February 2016, the Centre for Experimental Medicine hosted an event called “Know Your Enemy: Disease Focussed Research at Queen’s” as part of the NI Science Festival 2016. Members of the public were invited to engage with a range of different stands that provided information and hands-on demonstrations relevant to disease areas such as diabetes, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis and eye disease. Visitors got the chance to see how stem cells develop, how lungs work, where bacteria are found and what causes different eye diseases.
Over 300 people of all ages attended the event, and were provided with a short tour of the laboratories in the centre. Event organiser Dr. Derek Brazil said “It was a fantastic day for all of the staff and students who helped out at the event. We were particularly pleased to see so many young people enjoying the event-hopefully, many doctors and scientists of the future”.
