2/12/2018 - 2/12/2018

7:30PM - 9:00PM

Ulster University, York Street, Conor Lecture Theatre, Belfast, BT15 1ED

[Free Public Lecture Connected to the DSEP Conference Belfast]

Endurance activities like running, cycling, and triathlon present many physical and mental challenges to athletes including unwanted thoughts that urge slowing down, stopping, or even to quit. We completed a recent survey of 761 athletes and 95% of athletes reported experiencing such unwanted thoughts. Further, it appears these thoughts occur at all levels, even in the elite and experienced athletes. It seems that almost all of have experienced this urge at some point in their career as an endurance athlete.
We invite you to come to a free event where we will present some psychological strategies to help optimise performance overcome the urge to slow down, stop, or quit. We have been conducting research on this area for some time. In this event we will present strategies that focus on improving pacing, managing expectations, dealing with negative thoughts, and relaxing during endurance activity.

The content is suitable for beginner and experienced endurance athletes, coaches, and students.

The event will include practical applications of these strategies to demonstrate how attendees might apply them to support their own training and race events.
