The suicide rates in Northern Ireland are higher than in the UK and Ireland, and we have not seen the decline in rates experienced by neighbouring regions.

In this lecture Professor Siobhan O'Neill will discuss the research on suicide in Northern Ireland, and the evidence for the links between today’s suicide rates and our troubled history.

The pathways of transgenerational transmission of trauma, and the impact on future generations, not directly exposed to the violence of the Troubles will also be considered.

In addition, Siobhan will consider how psychological techniques may be applied to reduce suicidal behaviour in individuals who are receiving psychological care, and in a population who continue to suffer from the legacy of trauma.
