Online Research

Take part in research online!

If you are a parent and would like your child to take part in research from the comfort of your own home, please read the following information and download our flyer below.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for children aged 5 and 6 years old to participate in research for the developmental lab at Queen’s University Belfast

What is the study about?

We are interested in children’s understanding of preferences and emotions in others. One way to research this is to read children short stories and ask them how they think certain characters may be feeling.

What will my child do in this study?

You and your child will be invited to join a video call with a fully trained researcher. During these sessions, children will hear some small stories alongside fun cartoon pictures which will be shared to your screen. Throughout the stories children will be asked to answer some questions related to how the characters feel (e.g., about which of two characters is the happiest).

How long will it take?

The session will take no longer than 30 minutes.

How does online testing work?

If you agree to take part, we will invite you and your child to a secure video call (via Microsoft Teams) with a researcher who has enhanced Access NI clearance. A time will be arranged that is most convenient for you to take the call.

Why should my child take part?

In the current lockdown, we are unable to read these stories to children in schools and in the lab. However, we would love to keep our research going which we believe is important to understanding how children think and reason about others’ emotions. We hope that these studies provide you and your child an opportunity to take part in something different! We also hope that your child will find the sessions a fun and educational experience!

Will my child be rewarded for taking part in the study?

On completion of the study, we will send your child an e-certificate to thank them for taking part in research and being a fantastic junior scientist!
