Tugay Rifat Duyar

Tugay Rifat Duyar PhD Student
Tugay Rifat Duyar
Examining the Relationship between Reading, Speechreading and Audio-Visual Integration in Children with Developmental Dyslexia

What is your educational background?

Bachelor's degree:  Intellectual Disabilities Teacher Education at the Faculty of Educational Sciences, Ankara University

Masters Degree:  Audiology, Speech and Voice Disorders at the Graduate School of Health Sciences Otolaryngology Department, Gazi University

Masters Thesis:  Determination of the Acoustic Properties of Turkish Monosyllabic Word Stress

What are your motivations for pursuing a graduate-level qualification?

Scientific curiosity and desire for research.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

The best part of the course is the Developmental Brainwave Laboratory sessions that I do with my advisor.

What networking opportunities either as part of your degree or outside of your studies as part of your studies?

Thanks to the support of my advisor, I had the opportunity to work with the director of The Literacy and Deafness Development Research Lab (The LADDER Lab) Dr Fiona Kyle as my 3rd advisor. I plan to do some of my research at UCL in the future.

What have you enjoyed most about your time at Queen’s?

The most enjoyable thing is meeting with postgraduate students working on different types of subject’s psychology. This was very fruitful in terms of having a broad perspective.

What do you find interesting about your field of study and what inspires you?

The most interesting aspect of my field of study is the perceptual structures that I have just learned in terms of the human brain and linguistic processing, which I have been thinking about and trying to understand for a long time. Language development, which is the most interesting ability of human beings, is not only auditory but also auditory and visual, sensory, and cognitive organization. This is excellent work and it is my biggest motivation.

What are your career plans for when you complete your current programme of study?

After successfully completing my PhD program, I will continue my research as an academic at Izmir Democracy University as a condition of my scholarship provided by the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Turkey. Collaborating with QUB in the future and making valuable contributions to science are among my most important goals.
