Civil and Structural Engineering

CIVIL AND STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING RESEARCH

Civil Engineering is led by a Head of Discipline supported by team leaders with responsibility for maintaining excellence in its research groups of Intelligent and Sustainable Infrastructure (ISIG - including low carbon structural materials), Water and Energy Resources (WERG - including marine renewable energy) and Global Environmental Resilience Group (GERG).  Our vision is to provide an interdisciplinary space that enables researchers in their core disciplinary expertise to lead and collaborate on large cross-institutional projects such as the EPSRC funded SALINA (£1.5M) (WERG) and Roadmaps to Zero Net Emissions in Urban Public Transport (£4M) (ISIG), the H2020 funded PowerKite (€5.1M) (WERG) and H2020 funded REMEDIATE ITN (€3.7M) (GERG).

KEY RESEARCH PROJECTS

The Intelligent and Sustainable Infrastructure Group
Roadmaps to Zero Net Emissions in Urban Public Transport

Technological and societal changes are transforming the nature of public transport. This research will address concerns over air quality, congestion, and energy security and will deliver an understanding of the challenges arising from introducing next generation zero net emissions buses, with an emphasis on sustainable low/zero-emissions transport systems.

The Intelligent and Sustainable Infrastructure Group (ISIG) has joint research collaborations with the Centre for Intelligent Autonomous Manufacturing Systems (i-AMS) (PRP), the William Wright Technology (W-Tech) Centre, the Northern Ireland Advanced Composites and Engineering (NIACE) Centre, Northern Ireland Technology Centre (NITC), ECIT and will be part of the new Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre (AMIC) under the new £350M Belfast City Deal.

The Global Environmental Resilience Group
Irish Raised Bog Conservation Programme Methodology

Ireland has lost over 40% of its peat accumulating raised bog over the past 30 years. To reverse this trend and implement (technically and economically) effective conservation programmes, peatland researchers at SNBE have worked in collaboration with RPS Engineers to successfully develop conservation programmes for the Irish Government’s network of conservation sites.

The Global Environmental Resilience Group (GERG) is an interdisciplinary group which includes engineers, environmental scientists, geologists and hydrogeologists undertaking research in sustainable water resource management and risk management approaches to address contamination of soils and groundwater.

The Water and Energy Resources Group
SALINA – Saline Intrusion in Coastal Aquifers

The SALINA project is investigating the nature and extent of saltwater intrusion into coastal freshwater aquifers.  It will provide early detection of saltwater breakthrough, preventing contamination and loss of supply, and will therefore address one of the major challenges facing society in the 21st Century, the supply of potable water.

The Water and Energy Resources Group (WERG) is part of the Research Centre for Sustainable Energy (PRP) with connections to the Centre for Advanced Sustainable Energy (CASE) and the Bryden Centre.
