To date Dr Donnelly's research has generally been focused on the role of education in conflict and divided societies. She has published in the area of school governance in faith based schools and on the role of integrated schools in addressing division.

More recently she has led research projects which explore Shared Education in NI which is a relatively novel and pragmatic approach to addressing educational division.
