Portland Scholars Reunion

1 October, 2018

Lanyon building at night

CODA, Inc., first hosted students from the School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in the summer of 2014. In the years since, the CODA Social Work Scholars from Queen’s have continued to bring their enthusiasm, intellectual curiosity and exemplary work ethic to this thriving project.

The QUB Scholars visit CODA's largest clinic, which serves hundreds of patients a day; medically managed withdrawal management (detoxification), women's and men's residential settings; and prenatal and postnatal medical care for women in treatment for substance use disorders, and their infants.

The Scholars also tour programs maintained by CODA's peer agencies that serve homeless and teen clients. Queen's students attend lectures by physicians, researchers, government officials, and programs such as the Portland Police Bureau's Behavioural Health Unit, which serves to coordinate the response of Law Enforcement and the community's resources (including CODA) to aid people in crisis resulting from known or suspected mental illness and or drug and alcohol addiction.
