What has changed (and when)?

An initial phase was introduced institutionally in 2016-17 for Level 1 students only (including students who were required to repeat Level 1). This phase:

  • Removed mid-year examinations in January 2017 and replaced these with other more innovative types of assessments.
  • Introduced in January 2017 a timetabled student development programme.

Full implementation of the new academic year structure was introduced in 2017-18 across all undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes and included:

  • Removal of the mid-year examination diet in January.
  • The designation of two teaching periods which include provision for innovative assessment. Teaching will re-commence in early January for undergraduate students.
  • Retention of a two-semester structure for taught postgraduate students, contributing to a differentiated postgraduate experience.
  • Introduction of a progressive continuous assessment model across both semesters. Examinations have been timetabled only at the end of the second semester.
  • A 2-3 week student development programme has been timetabled after the undergraduate examination period in Semester 2 to facilitate a range of developmental opportunities for undergraduate students.
