Dr. Barbara Plankensteiner is undertaking collaborative and multisited research with Nigerian museum colleagues for a planned exhibition project on the Austrian production of embroidery textiles for the Nigerian market, where they are fashioned into clothing styles particularly worn for formal and festive occasions, for which Nigerians are renowned at home and in the Diaspora. The introduction of this material was an innovation of the 1960s and in the last 50 years this transnational economic network has fuelled a creative process in which actors (producers/designers in Austria and Nigerian merchants/customers) are constantly redesigning the product in a cross-continental discourse adapting to new market demands related to the developments in fashion and style in Nigeria.
