The NICOLA Health Assessment will take place in the Northern Ireland Clinical Research Facility at the Belfast City Hospital.
This health assessment will help medical and other health and social care professionals understand the experience and effects of ageing.
Although you may recently have had a check up with your doctor or feel that you are healthy enough this assessment is so that Queen's University Belfast can obtain data to analyse and monitor over the years of your involvement in NICOLA . It is not to report the state of your fitness back to you. We will however contact you (with your permission) should we come across something that needs GP consultation, for example Blood pressure.
What Happens During the Health Assessment?
Your appointment will take approximately 2 hours. A fully trained NICOLA nurse or NICOLA Research Assistant will ask you questions and seek your permission to take a variety of measurements and samples:
- Blood Pressure
- Lung Function
- Memory and Thinking
- Upper and lower body strength
- Height and Weight
- Waist to hip measurement
- Fat and Muscle measurements
- Eye Examination
- Urine sample
- Blood sample
Participation in the Health Assessment is entirely voluntary and if you feel uncomfortable with any measure or question you do not have to complete that part.
All information is kept entirely confidential and completely anonymised. Additional information regarding the data security and removal of personal details can be found in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section.
Feedback following participation in the Health Assessment has been very positive to date so we look forward to welcoming you to our modern research facilities.
Travel and Expenses
You are able to claim back any reasonable travel expenses for your attendance by completing a simple claim form following the assessments (include receipts as necessary). This will be given to you by the nurse.
For those that travel by car and park in the City Hospital car park, a pre paid car parking ticket will be provided upon your departure.
Additional information providing further details on the specific measures and samples can be found in the Participant Information Leaflet for the Health Assessment.
