PMI2 seminars on 'Entrepreneurship and Employability'

During the summer of 2010, three academic staff, two post-doctoral researchers and three masters level students, accompanied by a senior manager from Queen’s University visited the three partner institutions in China and led PMI2-related workshops in Ningbo, XiAn and Chongqing.

Tianjin, 31 August 2010

One of the teams which attended the Belfast workshop in June 2010 was from the Tianjin Municipal Highway Research Institute. Following their participation, they requested for a PMI2 seminar to be given at Tianjin to introduce the PMI2 objectives to their employees and to encourage their organisation to become part of the activities beyond the PMI2 project. Around 100 engineers attended the seminar led by Dr Yun Bai (Queen's University). The event was also covered by the Tianjin television network, which provided widespread dissemination of the workshop’s aims and deliverables.

Xi’An, 13 September 2010

This was a repeat of the June 2010 workshop in Belfast, with the exception of limiting the presentations to a half day, to focus mainly on entrepreneurial education in Queen’s, but the inaugural speech was delivered by the Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s University Belfast. Xi’An University of Architecture and Technology, one of the PMI2 partners, supported the research undertaken by the MSc students, and provided their curricula for Queen’s to review so as to identify the salient features of their courses and suggest changes needed. This workshop was essential to share the PMI2 goals and outcomes with them. Nearly 50 students from XAUAT attended this event along with their academic tutors.

Ningbo, 19 September 2010

This was a repeat of the workshop in Xi’An, but the opening talk was given by the Director of Research and Regional Office at Queen’s instead of the Vice-Chancellor. A keynote address was also given by Prof Jin, president of Ningbo Institute of Technology. Importantly, this workshop was attended by Ningbo Municipal Government’s head of entrepreneurship and employability practice, who warmly praised the event’s content and outcomes. As in the case of Xi’An University of Architecture and Technology, Ningbo Institute of Technology is a key partner of the PMI2 project and Professor Jin is the principal collaborator in China and the chair of the Chinese PMI2 steering committee. They also supported the research undertaken by the MSc students, and provided their curricula for review by Queen’s to identify the salient features of their courses and suggest changes needed. This event was attended by 10 industrialists along with about 100 students and their academic tutors.

Chongqing, 22 September 2010

This was a repeat of the workshop in Ningbo. Chongqing University is one of the partners of the PMI2 project and they have strong links with Chongqing Institute of Building Technology.  Both these organisations supported the PMI2 activities in Chongqing and hence it was essential to share the PMI2 objectives and early findings with them. They also supported the research undertaken by the MSc students, and provided their curricula for reviewing by Queen’s to identify the salient features of their courses and suggest changes needed. This event was attended by about 120 students and their academic tutors. Capitalising on its relevance, Chongqing University integrated this workshop with an ongoing Chinese entrepreneurship project, which held a follow up meeting two days later to discuss key outcomes.
