Junior Academy Take Flight!

On 20th October, Year 10 pupils from Ashfield Boys’ High School and Strangford College visited Queen’s to experience the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering’s state-of-the-art flight simulator. The pupils had previously visited Queen’s in May as part of the Junior Academy programme, when they were judged to be the winners of an engineering challenge to design and test a boat made from tinfoil and card. As a prize for winning the challenge, the pupils were invited back to Queen’s to gain hands-on experience of the flight simulator.

The workshop was led by SUPI partner Dr Jonathan Cole, along with research students Imelda Friel and David Allen, who were on hand to explain how an aircraft behaves and the importance of various design features and control mechanisms. All of the pupils had the opportunity to fly a mission under the supervision of Imelda and David, where they completed take off, cruise and landing operations. All of the students and teachers involved thoroughly enjoyed their experience, and expressed their thanks to Jonathan, Imelda and David for hosting the session.

St. Colm’s High School will also have the opportunity to take part in the workshop when they visit Queen’s on 10th November.
