Vote for Queen’s work on ionic liquids in Innovation Poll

Queen’s work on ionic liquid chemistry is in the running to be named the most important British innovation of the 21st Century.

The work of staff in QUILL is up against 11 other innovations from across the United Kingdom battling it out in a public vote to find the one that will have the greatest impact in the coming century.

The vote is part of the Science Museum’s Initiative on Great British past and future innovations.

Last week, Tesco Chief Executive Philip Clarke officially launched Queen’s new Institute for Global Food Security (IGFS) which will improve global food safety through the establishment of an international ‘food-fortress’ in Belfast.

April 2013 Payroll Deadline

Due to the University’s Easter closure, the normal payroll deadline will be moved back to Tuesday 9 April.

All payroll data, including timesheets, Jobshop timesheets, overtime claim forms, Childcare Voucher request forms, bank details amendments etc, must be received in the Salaries Office by Tuesday 9 April for inclusion in April salaries. This deadline also applies to fee payment request forms for the Non Staff Payments system (NSP) and External Examiners on the Modified Payroll System (MPS). Any data received after Tuesday 9 April will be processed for payment at the end of May 2013.

Please ensure all relevant staff are advised of this deadline to ensure timely payments to staff and non-staff payees. Monitoring Officers should ensure all March absences due to sickness are input to the Queen’s Online Absence Management System by Monday 8 April.

Deadline for QUB Teaching Awards

The closing date for receipt of applications for a QUB Teaching Award 2013 is 4.00pm on Wednesday 20 March. Further information is available in the Teaching Awards Notes for Guidance.

Lecture by Ireland Professor of Poetry

Ireland Professor of Poetry, Harry Clifton, will deliver a lecture entitled Into the Afterlife: Irish Poets in American Space on Friday 26 April at 7.00pm in the Great Hall. 

This is Harry Clifton’s third lecture given as the Ireland Professor of Poetry, a position he has held since 2010.

Barcroft Medal Lecture: Professor Eric Olson

Professor Eric Olson, Professor and Chair, Department of Molecular Biology, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Texas will deliver the 2013 Barcroft Medal Lecture on Monday 25 March 2013 at 5.15pm.

The lecture entitled The Molecules and Mechanisms of Heart Development, Disease and Regeneration will take place in the North Lecture Theatre, Medical Biology Centre with a reception afterwards in the foyer of the MBC.

Professor Olson’s laboratory studies genetic regulators of the heart development, cardiac stem cells and the role of microRNAs cardiovascular development and disease.

Still time to audition for QUB's Got Talent

There’s still time to audition for QUB's Got Talent, which will take place on Thursday 25 April in the Mandela Hall.

The show, in aid of the Simon Community and in association with Signature Works, will be hosted by Malachy Cush. Head Judge, VP Community, Aidan Hughes will be joined on the judging panel by Julian Simmons and Isabel Jennings.
