Vice-Chancellor’s Impact Prize 2014: Future Impact

Applications are invited for this year's Vice-Chancellor’s Impact Prize.

Prizes of £2,000 will be awarded under each of three categories, with an overall winner from these three awarded an additional £4,000. The categories are:

  • Supporting Health
  • Enriching Societies
  • Advancing Technologies

A separate prize of £2,000 will be awarded for the best submission based on the work of an Early Career Researcher.

Applications are invited based on the work of Queen’s research staff, describing how potential end-users of their research have been engaged with and included in their work to deliver impact.

Festival hits high note with new Music Sponsors

The 2014 Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queen’s has announced two new sponsors for key music strands of this year’s programme.  Leading telecoms provider O2 International Sim and Belfast Harbour have added their support as sponsors of the Music Club and the Classical Music elements respectively.

This year's Festival runs from 16 October - 1 November.

The Conversation: Have your say

The Conversation is an online independent source of news and views, sourced from the academic and research community and delivered direct to the public.

It is a powerful vehicle for the promotion of the University through the expertise of some of our key academics, and provides staff with the potential to disseminate some of their priority research to a truly international audience. Articles submitted by academics are regularly featured by media outlets including the BBC, The Guardian, New Statesman, The Times, The Economist and The New York Times.

  • Joe – Nicolas Cage returns to his indie roots in this superb Southern gothic drama.
  • Mood Indigo – Romain Duris and Audrey Tautou plunge headfirst into a surreal romance from writer-director Michel Gondry.

ECDL – now using an improved test system which allows the candidate to practice and diagnose what topics need revision (note – this is not used for ECDL Advanced).

Today’s Tip: In Excel: Use the LEN function to count the number of characters in a cell e.g. =LEN(A1). Useful if you use a spreadsheet to plan your tweets.

Half-day conference for World Suicide Prevention Day 2014

A half-day conference on Suicide in Northern Ireland: Research and Realities will take place on World Suicide Prevention Day on Wednesday 10 September.

The conference will bring together academic researchers and those working at the frontline of suicide prevention.

Presenters include Professor Mike Tomlinson, Head of the School of Sociology, Social Policy and Social Work at Queen's, who will deliver a presentation entitled Getting the measure of Suicide: Recent Trends.
