Nominations for University Pro-Chancellor

Staff are being invited to submit nominations for the position of Pro-Chancellor.

The University currently has two Pro-Chancellors – Rotha Johnston and Stephen Prenter.  Rotha is due to stand down as Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Senate on 31 December 2015 and steps have been initiated to appoint a third Pro-Chancellor, with effect from 1 May 2015.

Nominations should be submitted to the Registrar’s Office by 4.00pm on Friday 27 February 2015, using the approved pro forma.  Further information is available here

The University’s Social Media Directory is now available at:  

The aim of the Directory is to help staff, students and the public connect with our various Schools, Research Centres, Support Services and Clubs and Societies through social media channels.  Information on how to use the Social Media Directory is available on the Social Media blog.

Vote for Professor Máire O'Neill

Professor Máire O’Neill from the School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science has been nominated to enter the Semta Engineering Hall of Fame.  Máire is one of just five shortlisted for this prestigious award which brings together and celebrates the most inspiring and innovative British Engineers.

One-time British Female Inventor of the Year, Máire is one of Europe’s leading digital security experts.  Her research involves designing novel security solutions for communications applications such as email, cloud, set-top boxes and mobile technologies.

The poll is now live and you can vote for Máire here.  Voting will close on Sunday 15 February and the winner will be announced at the Semta Skills Awards Gala Dinner on 24 February.

Café Krem to open in Students’ Union and the Ashby Building

Accommodation and Hospitality are delighted to announce that Café Krem will open in the Students’ Union and the Ashby Building from week commencing Monday 2 February, replacing Starbucks and the Daily Grind respectively. Hot and cold food, including a ‘made to order’ sandwich bar will be available as well as soups, pasta dishes, baked goods and a range of confectionary items.

Opening hours for both outlets will be 8.30am – 4.00pm, Monday to Friday.

NI Science Festival: 19 February – 1 March

Queen's is a partner in the inaugural NI Science Festival which runs from 19 February  1 March. The 11-day extravaganza will focus on the wonders of science, technology, engineering and mathematics with over 100 entertaining and informative events taking place at venues across Northern Ireland, including Queen’s.

British Academy Regional Visit

Queen’s will host a Northern Ireland regional visit by the British Academy on Friday 30 January 2015, 12.00pm – 4.30pm in the Council Chamber and Canada Room.
Staff will be able to find out about the various funding opportunities offered by the British Academy and hear from current award holders about their experiences of applying to the British Academy. A light buffet lunch will be provided followed by a series of presentations and talks with a Q&A session. There will be an opportunity for one-to-one sessions with British Academy staff to discuss specific projects.

Newton Fund - Delivery Partners Workshop

Queen’s will host a half-day regional workshop on behalf of the Newton Fund Delivery Partners on Wednesday 18 February 2015 from 12.30pm – 5.00pm in the South Dining Hall.
The Newton Fund is a new government initiative worth £375 million over five years and is intended to promote and facilitate scientific engagement between the UK research base and 15 priority low- and middle-income countries.  More information on the Newton Fund can be found on the International Unit website and on the website.
At the workshop, staff will hear from the various delivery partners involved with distributing this funding and discuss emerging priorities.  This interactive event will include presentations, group discussions and networking activities.  Researchers working in any disciplinary field across the University are invited to attend.

I‌CRH Call for Applications: 2015–16 Project Research Groups

The Institute for Collaborative Research in the Humanities invites expressions of interest from colleagues across Queen's wishing to set up a Project Research Group in the Institute for the 2015-16 academic year. 

‌A successful Project Research Group in the Institute will bring together colleagues from different Schools, with different disciplinary backgrounds and training, and at different stages in their career to work together over the year on a specific set of interdisciplinary research questions through seminars, conferences and grant-writing activities.

The Institute hopes to make up to five awards, worth up to a maximum of £5,000. Application procedures can be found on the ICRH website here and the closing date is 6 March 2015. Expressions of interest which embrace the Institute's annual priority research theme for 2015–16  'Health, Well-being and the Humanities' – are encouraged and may be prioritised in the allocation of funding.

Institute for Conflict Transformation Call for applications for Interdisciplinary Research Groups 2015 – 2016

The Institute for the Study of Conflict Transformation and Social Justice (ISCTSJ) invites applications from researchers interested in establishing an Interdisciplinary Research Group to focus on a particular problem, question or issue in the broad field of conflict transformation and social justice.

Four awards worth up to £5,000 each will be made for the academic year 2015–2016.  Previously successful applicants, who have demonstrated that they have completed the activities and met the outcomes specified in their previous award, are eligible to apply for a second year of funding up to a maximum of two consecutive years.

The closing date for applications is 4.00pm on Friday 30 January 2015.

European Conference on Domestic Violence

The School of Sociology, Social Policy and Social Work will host the European Conference on Domestic Violence from 6  9 September 2015. The conference is a partnership between academic institutions in the UK, Ireland, Norway and Sweden.  Nearly 300 abstracts from 25 countries have already been received, and the deadline for submissions is Friday 30 January 2015.

Information session on Belfast Bright Club

Belfast Bright Club is relaunching on Thursday 19 February (8.00pm – 10.00pm in the Black Box) as part of the NI Science Festival.

Bright Club is a thinking person’s variety night where comedy meets curiosity. It brings together local comedians with academics in Northern Ireland’s universities.

Bright Club is currently seeking interested academics to perform, both as part of the launch night and at future events.  An information session will take place on Wednesday 28 January (3.00pm  5.00pm) in Computer Science at Elmwood, Building 1, Lecture Theatre A.
