Queen’s named Family Friendly Employer of the Year

Queen’s has been named the 2015 Family Friendly Employer of the Year in the Public Sector Category at the Employers for Childcare Awards.

The awards recognise and celebrate organisations that provide and actively promote family-friendly working practices and provide an opportunity for employers to gain recognition for going above and beyond legal requirements.

Queen’s received the award for its core Family Friendly Policies and activities undertaken as part of the Staff Wellbeing initiative, including fitness programmes, lunchtime information sessions, personal resilience training and support for carers and international staff.

Queen's Annual Fund - Call for Applications

Queen's Annual Fund logoApplications are now open for this year's Queen’s Annual Fund which supports and enhances all aspects of the Queen’s experience for students.  Unrestricted funds are raised annually from graduates and friends of the University. The sum available this year will be dispersed as follows:

  • £32,500 to the University's priority fundraising projects
  • £32,500 to scholarships and bursaries  
  • £65,000 to projects that enhance the student experience

The closing date for applications is 12.00pm on Friday 6 November 2015 and decisions will be announced on Friday 18 December 2015. It is a condition of acceptance that the project managers must attend the Awards. Presentation and photo-call will take place on Wednesday 3 February 2016.

Staff Wellbeing: Breast Cancer Awareness Session

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Staff Wellbeing have organised an awareness session for staff.  

Delivered by Cancer Focus, the session will take place on Wednesday 21 October 2015, 1.00pm – 2.00pm (location TBC). Lunch will be provided.

Green Challenge Project for students launched

Green Challenge ProjectA new Green Challenge Project has been launched to encourage Queen’s students to go green.

Organised by the Environmental Team, the challenge is for students to come up with an exciting and innovative idea for a project which will promote environmental awareness within the University. Grants of up to £500 will be available to help implement the project.

Submissions now open for NI Science Festival

NI Science Festival 2016Following the success of the inaugural NI Science Festival in February, the 2016 festival will take place from Thursday 18 – Sunday 28 February 2016.

Organisers are inviting Queen's staff to submit their ideas and events for the Festival.  The deadline for submissions is Friday 27 November; however, you should get in touch with the Festival Director, Chris McCreery (chris@nisciencefestival.com), to discuss your plans and proposals before this deadline.

Annual Meeting of Convocation 2015 and Convocation Lecture 2015

The Annual Meeting of Convocation 2015 and Convocation Lecture 2015 will take place on Thursday 19 November 2015 at 7.00pm in the Canada Room and Council Chamber, Lanyon Building. The speaker is John Larkin QC, Attorney General for Northern Ireland.

Information about the Annual Meeting, including how to submit motions, is available on the Development and Alumni Relations website.

NI Year of Food Photography Competition launched

NI Year of Food Photography CompetitionTo mark Northern Ireland’s Year of Food, the Institute for Global Food Security is supporting an Invest NI photography competition to depict the quality and uniqueness of NI produce.

Invest NI is looking for iconic photography capturing three key attributes – quality, naturalness, purity – of Northern Ireland produced or processed food. The photography will be used in promoting local food and drink in external markets.

Open to all Queen's staff and students, the competition runs from 1 October – 30 November 2015. Applicants can enter up to a total of five photographs. NI Year of Food Photography Competition Submission Details.

Institute of Spatial and Environmental Planning Seminar Series

The Institute of Spatial and Environmental Planning invites staff to attend a lecture on ‘Overcoming barriers when translating good ideas into better practice: lessons from ‘green infrastructure’ planning' by Dr Michael Lennon, Lecturer in Planning and Environmental Policy, UCD. 

The lecture will take place on Wednesday 28 October 2015, 12.30pm – 1.45pm in the SPACE Board Room, 01.018, David Keir Building.

Annual Clare Macmahon lecture: 13 October 2015

Queen’s Gender Initiative (QGI) and the Queen’s Management School will host the Annual Clare Macmahon Lecture on 'A Growth Mindset' on Tuesday 13 October 2015, 4.00pm – 6.00pm, in the Senate Room.

Part of QGI's  “Inspiring Role Models Network”, the lecture will be given by Elaine Coughlan, a co-Founder and General Partner of Atlantic Bridge Capital, a Global Growth Equity Technology Fund.

School of Creative Arts: Ensembles, Performing Groups and Societies

Performance Groups 121015 image Creative ArtsThe School of Creative Arts is actively seeking new members for ensembles, performing groups and societies at Queen’s.  Run by staff, professionals and students, these groups include the Chamber Choir, Queen’s University Brass Band, Queen’s University Big Band, QUBEnsemble (QUBe), Queen’s University Symphony Orchestra (QUSO), Music Society Choir and Queen’s Viol Consort.
