Dr Pollard was appointed to a lectureship in Condensed Matter Physics at Queens University Belfast (QUB) in 1995. Prior to this he held PDRA posts at the Universities of Salford and Liverpool

Area(s) of Expertise

Dr Pollard has expertise in relating the functional properties of materials to their microstructure. Recently, and in line with growing trends, his research effort has shifted to concentrate on the production of nanostructured materials via self-assembly. Progress has been achieved by employing a variety of techniques, including

  • oblique incidence sputtering
  • oxidation of sputter deposited aluminium thin films
  • electrochemical processing.

The materials that have been developed to date are compatible with industrial processing and of considerable promise in a number of areas including optical devices and data storage.
