Identifying and applying for appropriate funding for your research can feel like a labyrinthine task. At times, it’s difficult to know where, or even when, to start - either in general, or with specific funders, schemes, requirements, and deadlines in mind. But winning research funding is often a central part of a successful academic career, affording you both greater professional security and the ability to drive your research interests on to the next level. 

This information session seeks to demystify national and international funding opportunities for researchers across all faculties. It will showcase general information relevant to all forms of funding, showcase suitable opportunities and how to find them, and provide an introduction to research project planning and development.   

In addition to this, we will enrich the session by providing information on future opportunities for workshops on grant writing with Research Development colleagues and academic peers.

Programme Objectives

The main objectives of the workshop are to: 

• Provide you with information, tips and tools on research funding 
• Help you to identify suitable funding opportunities 
• Demystify funding and grant-writing processes 
• Highlight opportunities to develop your grant-writing skills 
• Build confidence in applying for external funding 
• Learn how to turn rejection into a learning opportunity 

Facilitators

Dr Nina Shiel (she/they) | Research Development Manager 

Nina has worked as researcher and research support professional in Ireland and the UK for over 10 years. Her remit in Queen’s involves inter/transdisciplinary research in the European and international context. She is interested in helping colleagues to comfortably find their way into the European research environment and coaching them with their grant writing, confidence, and career development skills.    

Dr Kevin Tracey (he/him) | Research Development Officer 

Kevin is a former postdoc and lecturer, and is now a Research Development Officer for Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Queen's University Belfast. He has held personal fellowships and positions in the United Kingdom, America, and Ireland. 

Kevin is particularly keen on improving opportunities for AHSS researchers to secure funding, and on building the confidence and abilities of early-career, first-time, and less -successful grant writers across all faculties.
