Queen’s sustainability researchers meet President of COP26
Rt Hon Alok Sharma MP, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and President of the COP26 UN Climate Conference, visited Queen’s on Tuesday, 11 August, to hear from teams involved in sustainability projects.
Mr Sharma met with representatives of the Belfast Climate Commission, including Professor John Barry of the School of History, Anthropology, Politics and Philosophy (HAPP) who chairs the commission, as well as researching green political economy.
Professor David Rooney and Dr Peter Martin showed how the research in our Polymer Processing Research Centre (PPRC), including the ACCEPT Transitions project, is helping us move towards a circular economy by re-utilising plastic waste.
Finally, Sam McCloskey, Director of the Centre for Advanced Sustainable Energy (CASE) and Professor Trevor Whittaker of The Bryden Centre discussed their team’s research into creating clean energy from renewable sources, such as wave and tidal power.
COP26 (the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) was due to take place in Glasgow this year, but had to be postponed until 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
