Five Belfast restaurants you must eat in while studying at Queen's

There’s a reason we’ve been voted the top place to travel for food*, you know.

You’re at Queen’s and you want to treat yourself to a nice meal out. Well here are five places where you can fulfil your foodie desires.

1. Kitch

Kitch

This place is on the Dublin Road (close to the MovieHouse cinema) so it’s pretty near the city centre. I’ve been to this place twice - both times for the Debating Society Christmas dinner. If their food from these occasions is anything to go by then it certainly gets my recommendation. I keep meaning to go back but there’s too many other foodie haunts in and around Belfast to discover and try out.

2. Souls

Missing your mum’s Sunday dinner? Souls is perfect place to treat yourself one Sunday! Or if your family are over one weekend, get them to treat you to a Sunday dinner here - always make the most of it when your family come over! Souls is also on the Dublin Road, just a few minutes walk from Kitch. It’s not just for Sunday dinners though - it does a whole range of other foodie choices. I can certainly see how this place got its name with its soulful food. After all, is there a meal in existence with any more soul than a Sunday dinner?

3. Solo

Solo

Solo is really near the City Hall so is pretty central and is right outside the bus stop where the bus from either uni or Elms BT9 arrives meaning it’s super handy. When I went, I had the soup which came with Guinness wheaten. Now I thought I liked wheaten bread - never mind Guinness wheaten! I’d almost go back just to have another few slices. Solo has a pre-theatre menu that makes it a bit cheaper - don’t worry you don’t have to be an actual theatre-goer to make use of it! (although if you do like a bit of theatre, then check out my blog on the theatre houses in Belfast!)

4. AM:PM

AMPM

This one is really easy to find - it’s also just next to the City Hall. It has a really nice atmosphere inside to complement the super tasty food. The last time I went, I had trio of duck: duck sausage, duck breast and duck leg - a bit more variation compared to crispy duck pancakes! I can also recommend their bohemian chicken - it’s full of spice and flavour. They also do really good Ulster Fry so can recommend it for a Saturday morning brunch treat.

5. Yum

Unlike the other ones I’ve mentioned, this one isn’t in the city centre - instead it’s up in the Stranmillis area so perfect for anyone who lives up in that direction. One recommendation I have is their beef daube - I’ve no idea what a daube is but it’s certainly a good choice and their spiced apple crumble is perfect if you’re still a bit hungry after your main. One criticism - they use slates for some of their meals - I’m certainly not a slate fan, or chopping boards for that matter - give me a proper plate!

Peter Moor

English with Linguistics | 2nd year | Huddersfield, England

I am 19 year old Yorkshire lad, born and bred but now studying English with Linguistics at Queen's. I decided to come to over to Northern Ireland after many holidays visiting family across the country. I am part of the university politics society and the debating society. This semester I'm also doing a French language course - wish me luck! I'm a keen swimmer which is certainly needed when this country has so much good food to offer!
