2022

We wish a warm welcome to postgraduate student Angela Adami

26 May, 2022

Angela is a PhD candidate in Political Science and Sociology at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at Scuola Normale Superiore (Florence).

Title: Past Storylines and Present Moves. The Temporality of Migrants' Collective Action

Supervisors in my home institution: Donatella della Porta, Lorenzo Zamponi

Angela’s research investigates migrants' collective action through a temporal lens, focusing on the biographies of migrants who participate in collective action and exploring the processes of collective memory building within very diverse groups, which do not share a common social past and longstanding political traditions.  More broadly, the project relates to the study of collective identity and in-group boundaries.

The research largely draws on social movements studies and connects to the existing literature in Memory studies and to Critical approaches to migration.

Whilst at the Institute, Angela will be supervised by Dr Teresa Degenhardt, Lecturer, QUB School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work, and Institute Fellow.

During the past three years, Angela has conducted extensive fieldwork in different cities in Italy, collecting life history interviews and doing participant observation within various groups.

Angela is now in the final year of her PhD and is in the process of writing her thesis.

She will be at the Mitchell Institute until the end of June.
