Classification of diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes is caused by pancreatic beta cell destruction leading to no insulin being produced.

Type 2 diabetes is caused by a combination of insulin resistance and beta cell insulin secretory dysfunction - in other words, either challenges utilising insulin effectively or not producing enough insulin.
 
Gestational diabetes is diabetes that occurs for the first time during pregnancy.
