Key messages for a mother with diabetes postnatally:

  • Insulin requirement returns to pre-pregnancy dose following birth
  • Frequent blood sugar monitoring in initial postnatal period observing for signs of hypoglycaemia especially if breastfeeding
  • If breastfeeding, encourage snacks between meals due to calories used during feeding
  • If baby in neonatal unit post birth, psychological support will be required
  • Ensure full review by diabetes team prior to discharge
  • 6 week review with multidisciplinary team
  • Discuss contraception – encourage preconception advice prior to next pregnancy
