The ‘Sounding Conflict’ research team and the Mitchell Institute are delighted to announce details of our forthcoming symposium, the third annual event in the PaCCS (AHRC) funded interdisciplinary research programme

‘Sounding Conflict: From resistance to reconciliation’ (2017-2021).

This symposium will explore how sound, music and storytelling variously inform experiences, memories and narratives of conflict from around the globe and consider how they can be instrumental in promoting and sustaining pathways to peace.  We will examine how sonic environments, music-making and theatrical practices are reshaping embodied effects of violence and promoting healing and social change. The symposium will examine diverse sonic processes in conflict and post-conflict contexts and consider challenges that they present for academics and practitioners, as they each seek to influence conflict transformation in their respective practices.

Our keynote speakers are:

  • Doctor Olivier Urbain (Min-On Music Research Institute, Tokyo)
  • Professor J. Griffith Rollefson (University College Cork)
  • Laura Hassler (Founder and Director of Musicians Without Borders)

The symposium will also feature academic-practitioner panels, interactive workshops on image theatre and creative methodologies, as well as three film screenings on these issues.

The Sounding Conflict symposium and research team brings together scholars from sonic arts, anthropology, political science, English and theatre studies, alongside partner organisations from Northern Ireland, the Middle East and Brazil.

For further information on the programme please go to the website at soundingconflict.org.

This event is free and is open to the public.  All QUB staff and students are invited to attend.
