Invisibility Appropriation and Subversion:
British Army Observation Posts at the Shankill Falls Divide, 1972

Karin Elliott (Architect ARB RIBA) is a PhD Candidate in Architecture at Queen’s University Belfast.  Karin will deliver a presentation titled ‘Invisibility Appropriation and Subversion: British Army Observation Posts at the Shankill Falls Divide, 1972.’

 Date: Wednesday 29 September 2021

Time: 5.00pm to 6.00pm

Location: Virtual Session via Teams

Karin will present her research of British Army observation posts. Acting as visible expressions of sovereign authority, observation posts performed a narrative role in shaping the semiotic spaces of the city, in the context of violent and non-violent forms of resistance to the military presence. Observation posts carried significant socio-political meanings, constructed authoritative messages and signalled disciplinary control, defined by hierarchical observation. Observation posts operated in tandem with dividing walls to signal coded, militarised spaces and territories of urban containment.
