In this workshop Prof Kieran McEvoy, Institute Theme Lead (Rights and Social Justice) and Dr Lauren Dempster Institute Associate Fellow (Rights and Social Justice) and Sabbatical Fellow, will discuss the role of embarrassment, shame, and honour in shaping the behaviour of non-state armed groups - in particular in their efforts to respond to victims of past violence.

The Workshop will be held in-person and will be chaired by Professor Richard English (QUB). Places will be limited to 18 and must be booked in advance.

The Workshop will involve questions, debate and discussion on the role of embarrassment, shame, and honour in shaping the behaviour of non-state armed groups - in particular in their efforts to respond to victims of past violence.

Dr Lauren Dempster

Lauren’s research is interdisciplinary in nature, drawing on the fields of transitional justice, criminology, law, anthropology, and politics in particular. Her research interests include ‘dealing with the past’ in Northern Ireland, ‘disappearances’ and transitional responses to ‘disappearing,’ the construction of victimhood, victim mobilisation, and themes of agency, voice, silence, and memory.

Professor Kieran McEvoy

My work focuses on the relationship between law, transitional justice and conflict transformation including; apologies, truth recovery, politically motivated prisoners, ex-combatants, victims, amnesties, human rights, restorative justice and the role lawyers in conflict.
