'Dealing with the Past in Northern Ireland’ Event in the British Academy, London
Three of the Mitchell Institute’s Fellows who are also Fellows of the British Academy attended and presented at a ‘For Fellows By Fellows’ event on the theme of addressing the past in Northern Ireland on 13 October 2025.
The event was organised by Professor Kieran McEvoy FBA as part of his ongoing Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship project on how armed groups address past human rights violations. In addition to Professor McEvoy, the speakers included Professor Chris McCrudden FBA, Professor Richard English FBA and it was chaired by Professor Fionnuala Ní Aoláin FBA.
Commenting on the event, Professor McEvoy said: "This was an excellent event, and I am very grateful to Richard, Chis and Fionnuala for agreeing to take part. The event was timed to coincide with the imminent introduction of the new Legacy Act in Westminster. It was very well attended including by some of the most distinguished lawyers, political scientists, historians as well as scholars from other disciplines currently working in UK universities. As one might expect, the quality of the discussion and interrogation of our papers was of the highest quality. It also suggested that the efforts to sustain the Northern Ireland peace process remain a topic of serious scholarly as well as practical interest."
