Former Institute Visiting Professor to Deliver Holocaust Memorial Day Lecture

This free event will take place on Tuesday 26 January at 12 noon via Zoom, lasting approximately one and a half hours.

In the memory of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides, join Lord Mayor, Alderman Frank McCoubrey and Professor James Waller, Cohen Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College, New Hampshire, for a virtual talk exploring why the Holocaust matters in today’s deeply divided world

As we commemorate the victims of the Holocaust, we are challenged to also recognise it as a historical event with contemporary lessons for today's deeply divided world. Commemorating the Holocaust is to be reminded of the diligence necessary to promote and protect human rights, the deep commitment to nurture inclusive democratic institutions, and the willingness to see our neighbour in the face of ‘the other’, rather than as a threat. Commemoration of the past must be followed by responsibility to the present and our shared future.

Drawing on face-to-face interviews with over 225 perpetrators of genocide and mass atrocity, this event will explore the process by which ordinary people become capable of committing such extraordinary evil and will provide insights into the importance of challenging the hate that gives rise to division.
