Will talks between US officials and Taliban leaders bring Afghans hope?

High-level discussions between Taliban leaders and US officials have taken place in Doha this week, at a time of humanitarian crises in Afghanistan. These are the first face-to-face discussions since the Taliban retook power in 2021.

Professor Michael Semple was a member of the panel on Al Jazeera’s Inside Story that aired on 2 August 2023, reflecting on the possible impact of the talks. Discussion included human rights, oppression of women and children, sanctions, humanitarian assistance, the economic crises, and hostage diplomacy.

Professor Michael Semple is a Professorial Research Fellow at the Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice and the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics at Queen’s University Belfast.
