CDT PhD/EngD Project Title: Novel Nanophotonic Devices: From Concepts to Applications

Supervisor: Professor Robert Hadfield, Quantum Sensors Group, University of Glasgow
A variety of high performance sensor materials (refractory metal nitrides and silicides) will be produced and patterned using the state of the art capability of the James Watt Nanofabrication Centre at the University of Glasgow. High performance optical cavity and nanoantenna structures will be computationally modelled and constructed. Optical testing down to the single photon regime from near to mid infrared wavelengths will be carried out using state of the art capability in the Quantum Sensors group laboratories in UoGI will carry out this project with the aim of creating new superconducting sensor designs, Increasing device performance and explore routes for low cost manufacturing.

General Research/Science Interests:
Single Photon detectors. Superconducting materials. Low temperature experimentation. Plasmonic nanostructures. Nanofabrication and design.

Successful Funding:
Graham foundation grant 2019

CDT Involvement:
2020 Cohort student buddy.

Impact Activity:
Coding. Undergraduate teaching.Entrepreneurship Foreign language courses. Presentation skills.

Testimonial:
