Grand Challenges & Cross Cutting Themes

At the Centre for Education & Society (CES), our research focuses on transforming engineering and computing education to address society's pressing challenges, with particular emphasis on two Grand Challenges: Generative AI and Sustainability in Education. Together, these research streams advance our mission of delivering research-based, societally relevant engineering and computing education.

1. Our Sustainability and Education work focuses on innovative research through multiple pathways (within and outside the Curriculum); examples include the EEECS Sustainability Hackathons and the Engineers Without Borders Design Challenge (EWB) embedded in our second year module on Software Engineering and Systems Development (CSC2058). These initiatives seek to seed sustainability principles across the curriculum while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and real-world impact.

2. Our Generative AI and Education work has been focusing on how AI technologies can be responsibly integrated into education. Examples include work on tutoring chatbots and the exploration of use of generative AI in data science teaching

3. Our Innovation in Learning Experience research investigates evidence-based approaches to enhance student learning, focusing on equal opportunities and well-being. We explore automated assessment tools, virtual tutoring systems, and strategies that support diverse learning across modules. An example is our collaboration** with the Vertically Integrated Projects (ViP) consortium. In VIP programs, UG students from different academic years and disciplines - work with faculty on ambitious, and long-term research projects. VIP operates like lab groups or think-tanks, giving students direct involvement in the research and innovation process while they earn academic credits.
