Metaverse Horizon-Scanning Project
About the Project
Queen’s University Belfast completed a two-phase Metaverse (and adjacent) technologies horizon-scanning project. The research was supported via UKRI by the DCMS Science and Analysis R&D Programme; it is independent research produced according to the research team's hypotheses.
The first phase, completed in July 2023, consisted in an analysis of UK interests and activity in related technical areas via a wide consultation with UK companies and academics.
‘Shaping the Metaverse: Policy engagement with immersive technologies in the UK’
The second phase was composed of three major research work packages which address the areas of
- 1.) Metaverse standardisation and how the UK can benefit from an open and interoperable infrastructure;
- 2.) Metaverse privacy and security threat analysis, regulated access to metaverse datastores and especially
- 3.) Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) use cases and their likely impact on the UK industrial, social and commercial environments.
