The Centre for Wireless Innovation
Based at Queen's Titanic Quarter

The Centre for Wireless Innovation is the UK’s largest research, development and exploitation base in physical layer wireless, and one of the strongest in Europe. The centre has a 60-strong team of research academics, postdocs, PhD students and engineers develop innovative underpinning technologies for Wireless. CWI is ranked 28th globally in the ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects in Telecommunication Engineering. This places the centre 5th in Europe and 2nd in UK in Telecommunication Engineering for 2019.

Research Themes
The work of our researchers focuses on the themes of RF through THz Systems and Signal Processing and Communication Theory. 

Researchers collaborate specifically on six sub-themes:

  • Future Cellular Systems
  • Physical Layer Secure Wireless
  • Electromagnetic Sensing
  • Green Wireless
  • Space Applications
  • Connected & Autonomous Systems

Research Director
The centre is led by Professor Simon Cotton.

Professor Simon Cotton is a world leading expert in the areas of wireless channel characterisation and modelling. Among his other areas of expertise are 5G, device-to-device, vehicular, and wearable communications.

Simon received the 2010 IEEE H. A. Wheeler Prize Paper Award. He was awarded the Sir George Macfarlane Medal from the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Philip Leverhulme Prize from the Leverhulme Trust both in 2011. From 2010-2015, Simon held a highly prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship.
