This will lead to virtual responses by theatre-makers from across these islands and neighbouring European regions, each finding links with their own locality, creative practices and audiences. The debate will then be opened to the virtual audience, exploring how theatre and democracy can interact in the locality and in alliance across these islands and beyond.

Faced with the rise of isolationist English nationalism, and the disregard for democratic debate brought to the fore by Brexit, this event will generate new alliances between researchers and theatre-makers whose work combines regional focus and internationalist outlook, suggesting an essential alternative model of devolved culture and politics.

The Centre Cannot Hold will create alliances of local democratic spaces to galvanise exchange and creativity, a new metaphorical centre from the margins, and encourage people to jointly re-imagine a more democratic future.
