Applied developmental psychology is the study of how basic developmental science can be used to understand children and young people’s development in real-world settings.

This MSc aims to provide graduate students with an opportunity for advanced study in specialist topics in the field of applied developmental psychology and to prepare them for more advanced research in applied developmental psychology, professional training in psychology or other discipline-related professional training.

MASTERS IN APPLIED DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY

We have a long-standing reputation for research and practice in developmental psychology. Underpinned by discussion-led teaching, students will learn with and from each other. There will also be opportunities to learn whilst on placement. You will have access to specialised research facilities including a child-friendly development lab, eye-tracking equipment, EEG lab and movement innovation lab.

The topics covered in our MSc include quantitative and qualitative research methods, atypical development in the classroom, childhood adversity: from basic science to improving outcomes, and theoretical perspectives on child and adolescent development.

Completion of this one-year Master's will provide you with an advanced understanding of the field of Applied Developmental Psychology. The teaching team are specialists in each subject area and bring a wealth of up-to-date knowledge to the course.

Career Prospects

Where could you be in five years? Working with statutory and NGO organisations aimed at improving the lives of children and young people in vulnerable situations. Completing a doctorate in Clinical or Educational Psychology, or a research PhD in psychology.

You will be ambitious, curious, committed and enthusiastic. You will have an interest in working with children and young people to improve health, wealth-being and educational outcomes. You will also be interested in programmes and interventions to help children who are developing atypically or growing up in adversity.
