Remembering Professor Simon Doherty - our colleague, friend and mentor

18 December, 2024

The School of Biological Sciences is deeply saddened by the passing of our esteemed colleague, friend and mentor to many, Professor Simon Doherty.

Simon was a highly respected and internationally noted leader in his field, a champion of one health and the vital role the veterinary profession play in sustainability. His enthusiasm and contribution to the veterinary sciences have resulted in winning many prestigious awards, including being given the deserving accolade of World Vet of the Year earlier this year.

Simon began his veterinary career in progressive farm animal and equine practice. He was later appointed the Animal Health and Aquaculture Sector Specialist for the UK Government’s Department for International Trade.

He was a past president of the British Veterinary Association (BVA) and was the founding chair of the UK One Health Coordination Group, later chairing the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) Food Safety and Sustainability Working Group.

For the last fifteen years, Professor Doherty was also working with the international NGO, Ripple Effect (formerly Send a Cow) which is involved in sustainable development in six sub-Saharan countries – Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Zambia.

Simon was a very talented vet, scientist and teacher who inspired everyone he met and who worked alongside him, investing much time in supporting the next generation of veterinary practitioners.  He adored working with our students in the school and he made extraordinary contributions to our School, Institute and University. He had a profound impact on the lives and futures of many students.

Our thoughts are with Simon’s family, friends, and colleagues at this sad and difficult time.
