Find a PhD at Queen's University Belfast

A PhD is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling journeys you can undertake. It offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in a subject you are passionate about, develop specialist expertise, and make a meaningful contribution to knowledge and innovation in your field.

Many people assume that a PhD is a solitary pursuit, but that could not be further from the truth. At Queen’s, you will be supported by a dedicated academic supervisor, a strong network of research peers, and access to world-class facilities and technical expertise. You will be part of a collaborative community that encourages you to explore ideas, test theories, and grow as an independent researcher.

A PhD can be the right choice for a wide range of people, whether you are progressing directly from an undergraduate degree, building on a Master’s qualification, or returning to academia after time in industry. Entry requirements are similar to those of any postgraduate programme, and each project outlines the qualifications and experience required.

Fully Funded PhD Studentships

We offer a number of fully funded PhD studentships within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.

But what does that mean?
It means you will not pay any tuition fees, and you will receive a generous, tax-free stipend - typically equivalent to an entry-level graduate salary. Many studentships also include additional funding to support research-related travel, training, and conference attendance.

Eligibility criteria apply. Funding is primarily available to UK and ROI nationals, and EU nationals with settled status, with a limited number of funded places available for international applicants.

LIFE AS A RESEARCHER

Your journey as a postgraduate researcher is a personal one. Every project is unique, shaped by your own interests, curiosity, and drive, though often connected to established areas of research strength within the University. It is one of the most distinctive and rewarding roles you can have. Each day, you will develop new ideas, build expertise, and contribute to discoveries that have real meaning for you and for society.

You will not be alone on that journey. You will be supported by a dedicated PhD supervisor who will guide and challenge your thinking, as well as a vibrant community of fellow researchers within your School. Surrounded by world-class facilities and a university recognised for its research excellence, you will have every opportunity to grow, both professionally and personally, as you shape your own path as an independent researcher.

Listen to Ross’s story. After working in industry, he discovered a fully funded PhD project within the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He is now a full-time PhD student, currently in the second year of his research journey.

DOCTORAL TRAINING PROGRAMMES

A Doctoral Training Programme (DTP) is a funded PhD pathway designed to develop researchers in areas of strategic importance and emerging skills demand. These programmes are delivered through partnerships between universities, industry, and research organisations, ensuring that your training is both academically rigorous and closely aligned with real-world needs.

A DTP typically spans four years, beginning with a structured first year focused on research methods, technical skills, and professional development, followed by three years of intensive, project-based research. You will study as part of a cohort, learning alongside other researchers and building lasting professional connections. Throughout your PhD, you will benefit from guidance and expertise from both academic and industry partners, helping you to develop the skills, experience, and networks needed for a successful research career.

Each programme offers full fee coverage, a competitive tax-free stipend, and additional funding to support research costs, travel, and training.
