How to Apply

Complete Your Application
  • 1. Complete your FAFSA

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.studentaid.gov. When completing your FAFSA, you must list Queen's University Belfast as your school. Our school code is G22736. Federal and state deadlines for completing the FAFSA can be found here.

When you submit your FAFSA you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) summarising your application. The University will receive a report a few days later with the results of your FAFSA application. This will determine your eligibility for federal loans.

The U.S federal loans administrator will contact you to confirm your programme details and provide a sample cost of attendance.

How to complete the FAFSA, information available here.

  • 2. Complete Entrance Counselling

Entrance counselling must be completed for each year that you borrow federal loans at Queen's. The counselling will ensure that you understand your rights and responsibilities as a borrower.

    • Undergraduate students: Complete entrance counselling for Direct Subsidised Loans and Direct Unsubsidised Loans.
    • Graduate students: Complete entrance counselling for Direct Unsubsidised Loans and Direct PLUS Loans.

Postgraduate students and parents of dependent undergraduate students who have received an adverse credit check must complete PLUS credit Counselling.

Entrance counselling can be completed on studentaid.gov.

  • 3. Sign your Master Promissory Note (MPN)

A Master Promissory Note (MPN) must be signed for subsidised/unsubsidised loans and for PLUS loans. It is a legal document that explains the terms and conditions of your loan and in signing you promise to repay your loan and any interest and fees accrued.

    • Undergraduate students: Sign a MPN for a subsidised/unsubsidised loan.
    • Graduate students: Sign a MPN for a subsidised/unsubsidised loan and a MPN for a PLUS loan.
    • Parents of dependent students: Sign a MPN for a Parent PLUS loan.

MPN's can be signed on Studentaid.gov.

  • 4. Complete the PLUS loan application (if PLUS loan is required)

To apply for a PLUS loan, graduate or parents of dependent students must complete the PLUS loan application at Studentaid.gov. The application includes a credit check.

If you have been informed that you have an adverse credit history then you can either apply with an endorser or appeal the decision. You will need to complete PLUS credit counselling before you continue with your application.

Complete the PLUS loan application on Studentaid.gov.

  • 5. Accept the financial aid available

At the end of February students receive a financial aid offer, guidance on how to accept the financial aid available and information on loan disbursements and satisfactory academic progress. The cost of attendance (COA) used in the financial aid offer is based on estimated costs and can only be reviewed in exceptional circumstances.

The estimated COA can be viewed here.
