Mental Health Month

We know that this time of year can be stressful for students, and want to do everything we can to help you put your best foot forward in your life and studies!

The Graduate School offers academic, careers and community support all year round, but we have chosen to focus on supporting your mental health and wellbeing in a more specific way this month.

Check out our programme of events below, and pop into the Graduate School to see our ongoing wellbeing and mindfulness activities.

Yoga with Gill
May 12th & 19th | 5.15pm - 6.15pm

Take time for yourself with this free yoga class. Yoga focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing, boosting your physical and mental wellbeing at the same time. Led by a qualified instructor, this class is your opportunity to dedicate time to your personal wellbeing, which can help break cycles of stress and anxiety which may arise during your PhD or Masters. There’s no previous ability required – everyone is welcome! Yoga mats provided.

The Mental Health Market
May 13th | 2pm - 4pm

Take a break from your studies and join us for the first ever Mental Health Market at the Graduate School! Drop in for a variety of stalls from across the university, showing you what’s on offer to help you take a GLANCE at your mental health at this high-pressure time of year. Participants include the Queen’s Handy Helpers, Active Campus, Sustainability and Wellbeing, all with plenty of knowledge to give, great games and fun activities. This is the first step towards your five steps to wellbeing, and we can’t wait to see you there.

Your first step to wellbeing
A notepad with 'wake up and write' written in blue font. Underneath it reads 'Harness your writing productivity'. Beside the notepad is a sun with a smiling face. The background is light blue with two white clouds.
Wake Up & Write
May 13th & 15th | 9.00am - 11.30am

Get going in the morning; set new habits to improve concentration and enhance your writing productivity. As part of our focus on Mental Health Awareness throughout the month of May, this Wake Up & Write Series will have an added wellbeing element. Your wellbeing is the key to success in your studies!

Start your day off "write"
A dark blue background with an illustration of a lighthouse on the left hand side. The lighthouse is light blue and has waves at the bottom. At the top there are rays of yellow light shining outwards in a circle. Beside it there is text that reads 'Graduate School Spinathon' for 'Lighthouse'
Graduate School Staff Spinathon
Each week throughout the month of May our staff will cycle 221 miles.

221 is the number of people who died by suicide and had their deaths registered in Northern Ireland in 2023 (the most up to date statistics we have). This is with the aim of raising awareness and showing students that suicide is not a scary word. It is something we often neglect to talk about when it comes to mental health, but is as important an issue to consider as any. We hope to raise at least £221 for Lighthouse, a local charity focused on helping people with their mental health and supporting those whose lives are affected by suicide.
