Training & Development

ALL-CAN Training is designed for highly motivated students with strong academic potential and a clear interest in precision cancer medicine. Entry to the programme is competitive, and applicants are selected based on academic merit, motivation and readiness for doctoral-level research.

Research Training
Throughout the programme, students develop advanced research skills relevant to precision cancer medicine. Training is tailored to each student’s disciplinary background and research focus, and may span areas such as cancer biology, genomics, bioinformatics, data science, epidemiology, digital health and translational research.

During the Master’s year, students build core academic and methodological foundations while refining their research interests. This staged approach supports a smooth transition into doctoral research and enables the development of a focused, well-defined PhD project.

Doctoral Training and Research Environment
During the PhD phase, students undertake full-time doctoral research supported by joint academic supervision and international research collaboration. Training is closely integrated with the student’s research project and emphasises independence, critical thinking and research excellence.

Students gain experience of working in different research environments, developing the skills and confidence required to lead high-quality research in precision cancer medicine.

Professional and Transferable Skills
Alongside research training, ALL-CAN Training places strong emphasis on the development of professional and transferable skills that support a wide range of career pathways in academia, healthcare, industry and policy.

Key areas include:

  • Scientific communication and presentation

  • Collaborative and interdisciplinary working

  • Project planning and research management

  • Career development and leadership skills

These skills are developed through a combination of programme-led activities, hands-on research experience and institutional postgraduate training provision.

Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement
Patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) is embedded throughout the ALL-CAN Training pathway. Students are encouraged to consider the relevance and impact of their research for patients and the public, and to develop the skills needed to communicate research beyond academic audiences.
