CSIT Open Day 2025 Showcases the Future of Responsible AI and Cyber Security
Centre for Secure Information Technologies (CSIT) at Queen’s University Belfast was delighted to welcome leading expertise from academia, industry, and government to its Open Day 2025, with the theme Responsible AI and Cyber Security.

Hosted at CSIT, Queen’s Titanic Quarter, the event brought together innovators, researchers, and industry professionals for a day of engaging talks, technology demonstrations and panel discussions. From cutting-edge research showcases to open conversations on emerging cyber threats and ethical AI deployment across public and private spheres, the Open Day connected academic expertise with real-world application.
Attendees had the opportunity to explore live demos by CSIT’s in-house engineers, engage with academic and PhD researchers, and participate in a consultation session facilitated by Responsible AI UK, that considered the responsible use of AI in cyber security.
Highlights of the day included talks from Prof Helen McCarthy, Chief Scientific Technical Advisor across the NI Executive, who provided insights on AI deployment across the public sector. John Sotiropoulos, Head of AI Security at Kainos and OWASP Board member, covered the growing threat of adversarial AI attacks, offering practical strategies for detection and defence.
Recognised as an Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research by the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), CSIT continues to drive progress by encouraging collaboration between academia and industry.
Thank you to all speakers, partners, and attendees who contributed to making the day a success.
Professor Máire O'Neill CSIT Director, commented:
“The CSIT Open Day 2025 provided an opportunity for us to update current and potential industry partners and stakeholders on the latest CSIT research and innovation activity, focusing on the theme of AI and Cyber Security."
