CSIT PhD researcher takes over Pete Tong's radio show this Christmas

18 December, 2019

Stuart Millar is a PhD student at the Centre for Secure Information Technologies (CSIT) and collaborates with Rapid7 as a research engineer as part of his studies. However, in addition to his cyber security talents, Stuart has impressive broadcasting skills that have recently been recognised by BBC Radio 1.

After entering his showreel in a search to find new broadcast talent, Stuart was one of 35 talented DJs selected to present a one-off show this December.

Stuart will be taking the reins of Pete Tong’s show from 9-11pm on Friday December 27th, be sure to tune in!

Despite sending off his showreel, Stuart sincerely believed he didn't have a chance of being picked.

"I sent off my demo, thought nothing of it, and then when I got the initial phone call from Radio 1, I didn't know the number and thought it was a spammy sales call, so pretended I wasn't me!

Luckily I still got offered the show by the Head of Programmes at the station, and was in London within a couple of weeks.

For all of my adult life, and before, I've wanted to present one of the Radio 1 dance shows.  It's something I’ve always been working towards in the hope that somehow it would happen."

Stuart has a keen interest in all things new in technology, music and broadcasting. He juggles his DJ commitments whilst working on his PhD project at CSIT, which applies deep learning in novel ways for Android malware detection, website vulnerability analysis and DDoS detection. Stuart was recently awarded Mobile World Scholar status by GSMA Mobile World Conference 2019 Barcelona for his work in Deep Learning for Mobile Malware Detection.

Good luck from all your colleagues at CSIT, we will be tuning in on Friday 27th December from 9-11pm.
