DIRECTOR AND COORDINATOR

Dr Alessandra Guida, Lecturer, Queen’s University Belfast-School of Law (A.Guida@qub.ac.uk)

Dr Alessandra Guida is a Lecturer in Law at Queen’s University Belfast – School of Law. In September 2022 she was appointed as a UK Trade and Sustainable Development Domestic Advisory Group (UK TSD DAG) Member Representative by the UK Department for International Trade (DIT) while in 2017 she was approved as an Italian lawyer. Dr Guida holds an LL.B. & LL.M. in Law from the University of Bologna - Faculty of Law (Italy). She wrote her LL.M Dissertation at Tilburg Law School, University of Tilburg (Netherlands). She also holds a Master of Research and a Ph.D. in Law from Macquarie Law School, Macquarie University, Sydney (Australia). Dr Guida is the author of the recent book “Biosafety Measures, Technology Risks, and the World Trade Organization: Thriving and Surviving in the Age of Biotech” book, which was published by Routledge in January 2023. She published numerous articles, book chapters, and special issues in the areas of trade law, environmental law, and human rights. She is also a member of world-leading networks, including the Global Network for Human Rights and the Environment (GNHRE) and the IUCN’s World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL).

Mariagiovanna Pais, PhD student, Queen’s University Belfast-School of Biological Sciences (mpais01@qub.ac.uk)

Mariagiovanna Pais is a passionate and dedicated bioinformatician, currently pursuing her PhD in Bioinformatics at Queen’s University Belfast-School of Biological Sciences.  Her PhD focuses on the analysis of the risks associated with pesticide use in the food sector using transcriptomics data. Her goal is to develop advanced software capable of processing and analysing vast amounts of data to identify potential hazards of pesticides to human health, an endeavour that promises to transform the field of toxicology.

Mariagiovanna consolidated her technical skills through a rigorous academic path, which includes a course in Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at Queen’s University of Belfast and Master’s degree in Experimental and Applied Biology at the University of Sassari, where she obtained top marks with honours. She gained significant experience in the scientific field by working as a scientist in the Virology and Microbiology and Biochemistry laboratories of the University of Sassari, contributing to innovative research projects.
